Injury prevention is one facet of self-care. Being aware and sensitive to predisposing factors that may contribute to muscle can help you develop safer habits in your work and personal life. Self-awareness is a valuable type of “preventative medicine.”

There are two kinds of major injuries: direct trauma and indirect trauma.  Direct trauma happens through impact. Such as in a car accident, while indirect trauma occurs with overloading, such as carrying something that is too heavy for you.

We have some control over direct trauma – such as looking both ways when we are  crossing the street. Fortunately we have much more control over indirect trauma. So lets take a look at some predisposing factors that can lead to muscle injury or muscle imbalance through indirect trauma.

1. Inadequate warm-up before activity can lead to trauma of unpliable tissues.

2. Stretching a muscle beyond its range of motion can lead to muscle tears.

3. Loading a muscle with a force it is not strong enough to resist can result in a tear.

4. Overloading a muscle or structure with repetitive use all cause damage over time, leading to tendinitis.

5. Postural imbalances can overstretch ligaments, muscles and tendons during activity leading to trigger points and uneven wear patterns in joints.

By being aware of these predisposing factors, you can help your own injury prevention.
